FDR XAIR Portable Radiography Unit

X-ray radiography enables the analysis of the internal structure of artworks on canvas, panel, paper, and cardboard. By measuring variations in radiation absorption, it reveals the stratigraphy of the painting and the opacity of high-density pigments, such as lead white. As an essential tool for heritage diagnostics, it facilitates technical study, authentication, and the assessment of an artwork’s condition.

RES is equipped with the FDR Xair portable radiography unit, developed by FUJIFILM, which provides high-precision imaging without altering the surface of the artwork.

Lightweight and easily transportable, this unit allows on-site examinations within collections, museums, and studios, minimising the risks associated with moving fragile artworks. It is also used in our laboratory for in-depth investigations and detailed analysis of materials and their evolution over time.

In full compliance with current regulations, RES implements strict protocols to ensure the safe use of radiography. Each examination is carried out with the utmost precision, with operators equipped with lead aprons and rigorously limiting exposure to radiation.
